Inspired by this event she got into politics to change discriminatory acts through legislation. She went on to win a seat in the US House of Representatives, she was the first Asian- American woman and the first woman of color to hold a seat in Congress, as well as the first woman from Hawaii. She served 12 terms!! She then ran in the presidential election in 1972 as an Anti War candidate, then became the federal assistant Secretary of State for Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs. She then served as the president of Americans for Democratic Action. In 1990 she was again elected to the House and served 6 terms until her death in 2002.
